It's a complicated thing.

Would it be incorrect to say that you don't hate him, and while you may feel sympathy or pity, you cannot forgive him?

i might almost compare it to my perspective on my brother, save only that in this case i simply never cared enough about him one way or another. indifference is a step above hating him, at the very least

It's said that the true opposite of love is indifference, not hatred.

But there is little use to dwell on it. Things are as they are and will be what they will be.
